Our partner Cambiamo Rotta all’Europa would like to share with the partners and participants of the project #CitizensRoute73.eu the report of a consultation on the state and prospects of the EU which seems to us as a useful working document for the Preparation of debates that will take place in Louvain-la-Neuve on July 1st and 2nd.
This report is the result of a public consultation addressed to Italian citizens, giving them the opportunity to express an opinion on the European Union led by the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini, which ran from 12th February to 31st August 2016. About 10,500 people responded. Following this consultation, a Committee of Independent Experts was set up under the direction of Pier Virgilio Dastoli, President of the European Movement in Italy. The proposals were presented to colleagues from the Parliaments of the EU countries at an Interparliamentary Conference held on 17/03/2017 on the eve of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.
The third part, “Responding quickly to the demands of Europeans without changing the current Treaties”, focuses on the three challenges – economics, immigration and security – that respondents identify as the most urgent and for which they would like to see more effective initiatives of the “ Union.
Part four, “Launching the reform of the European Union”, summarizes the major disadvantages of the current Union system. While expressing a preference for the creation of a Federal Community, it proposes a method of work, a possible route which truly involves public opinion in the Member States and their regions, and which also involves their respective Representative democracy and those of the present Union.
